Police fire teargas to disperse traders protesting at Lagos market

Tension erupted at the Tejuosho Market shopping complex in the Yaba area of Lagos State on Thursday, September 18, 2025, as police operatives fired teargas to disperse traders protesting a prolonged power outage at the facility.

Eyewitnesses disclosed that chaos broke out when police officers deployed to the scene fired teargas canisters to disperse the protesters, causing shoppers and passersby to flee in panic.

One officer was also seen firing live rounds into the air as some of the protesters hurled objects in defiance of the security operatives.

The traders, who blocked sections of the market, accused the management of extortion and negligence, alleging that monthly service charges and electricity bills had been collected without providing adequate power supply.

“This blackout has crippled our businesses, yet they keep collecting money from us,” one aggrieved trader said.

The market management has yet to issue an official response to the traders’ allegations as of the time of filing this report.
