Police launch manhunt as gunmen abduct 5 Ogun poly students

The Ogun State Police Command says it has intensified rescue operations following the abduction of occupants of a private hostel in Ipara-Remo area of the state.

It was gathered that five students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Sapaade, were abducted by gunmen.

The students were kidnapped during an attack on a private hostel located along Paraga Road in Ipara-Remo on Wednesday evening.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 30, 2026, the Students’ Union Government President, Timothy Akinpelu, said the attack began at about 7:45 p.m.

Akinpelu disclosed that the assailants operated for about 30 minutes before fleeing with the victims.

He described the affected hostel as being situated in an isolated location surrounded by dense vegetation.

“The hostel is situated in a remote area surrounded by thick bush, making it vulnerable and unsuitable as a safe residential environment for students,” he said.

Akinpelu said several students escaped by breaking through the POP ceiling during the attack.

The SUG President said: “By the grace of God, several students escaped through the POP ceiling, while others were unable to flee.

“We can confirm that five students were abducted during the incident.”

Confirming the incident via a statement on Thursday, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said tactical teams and intelligence assets had been deployed to facilitate the safe rescue of the victims and apprehend those responsible.

“Rescue operations are ongoing, and all necessary resources have been mobilised to ensure the victims are recovered unharmed,” he said.

Babaseyi urged parents, students and residents to remain calm and disregard misinformation capable of undermining ongoing security operations.

The police spokesperson urged the public to report suspicious activities through the Gateway Shield toll-free line.
