Police nab 70-year-old, three others over attempted murder in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a 70-year-old man, Okon Akpan, along with three other suspects over alleged attempted murder and cult-related activities in Uruk Anam Local Government Area.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued Friday in Uyo, saying the arrests followed credible intelligence and were part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on violent crimes in the state.

The other suspects were identified as John Samson, 45; Emmanuel Asuquo, 50; and Idorenyin Umoh, 22. They were apprehended on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village in Uruk Anam LGA.

According to the police, the operation was launched after the approval of a petition alleging attempted murder, malicious damage, and cult-related activities in the area. Detectives acted swiftly, leading to the successful arrest of the four suspects.

During the operation, security operatives recovered one locally fabricated pistol and two long guns, reinforcing suspicions of the group’s involvement in violent crimes.

Police authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected gang. Residents were also assured that the situation in the area remains calm, with proactive measures in place to maintain peace.

The Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, urging the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support crime-fighting efforts.

The suspects are expected to be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
