Police recover stolen newborn, arrest suspect over fake pregnancy in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command has successfully recovered a day-old baby stolen from a government health facility in Ado Ekiti and arrested the suspect behind the crime.

According to Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abutu Sunday, the baby was taken from Okeyimi Health Centre on August 4, 2025.

A prompt investigation and credible intelligence led to the arrest of one Deborah Ayeni, a resident of Afao Road, Ado Ekiti, on August 6.

Following her arrest, Ayeni confessed to stealing the newborn to cover up a fake pregnancy.

Police investigations revealed that she had been deceiving her husband, who resides in the United Kingdom, into believing she was pregnant and had collected money from him based on the lie.

“The suspect admitted to stealing the child to keep up the deception.

“The child has since been reunited with the biological parents,” the police statement read.

Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Eribo, commended the swift police action and urged citizens to remain vigilant and support law enforcement with useful information to rid communities of criminal elements.

Ayeni is currently in custody and will face further investigation and prosecution.
