Policeman’s stray bullet kills WAEC student in Ibadan

A student writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has been killed by a stray bullet allegedly fired by a police officer in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

It was gathered that the student was on his way to the school for the examination when he was hit by a stray bullet allegedly fired by the policeman along the Gbagi Market Road in Ibadan on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Some eyewitnesses disclosed that the police officer was pursuing a vehicle suspected to be occupied by internet fraudsters.

It was learnt that the policeman opened fire during the pursuit.

Eyewitnesses said one of the bullets missed its target and hit a student riding on a motorcycle with his twin brother.

It was further gathered that the student was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A viral video further showed some angry residents protesting at the Oyo State Secretariat in the state capital with the student’s body.

Neither the Oyo State Government nor the State Police Command has spoken on the incident as of press time.
