Poly Rector warns students: We can’t afford to produce half-baked graduates

The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Sani Usman, says the institution cannot afford to produce and dish out half-baked graduates to society.

Usman said this during the 2024/2025 matriculation ceremony for newly-admitted students of the institution in Bauchi on Saturday, April 12, 2015.

The Rector warned the students that the polytechnic has zero tolerance for any form of examination misconduct as it places high value on its certificate.

He said: “We cannot afford to produce half-baked graduates to dish out to society, after labouring to build a reputation for this polytechnic over the years.

“For every form of misconduct committed in the examination hall, there is a commensurate penalty and I want to implore you to desist from any action or inaction that is considered as misconduct.

“There may be other institutions that have taken after us, but we are among the first set of tertiary institutions in Nigeria to start examination scripts auditing exercise.

“This goes to show that while protecting our reputation, we are also not forgetful of the plight of our students. In this institution, what you see is what you get.

“In line with international best practices, we have also installed CCTV cameras in most examination halls to uphold academic integrity and prevent examination misconduct.

“This measure reflects our resolve to maintain the highest standards of ethics and fairness in our assessment processes.”

Usman charged the polytechnic management to nurture, guide, and equip the students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to excel in their chosen fields to contribute positively to society.

Usman disclosed that the polytechnic received 6,928 applications for the 2024/2025 academic session for various National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes.

The Rector, however, said 6,266 students were admitted, out of which 5,068 got registered, adding that this included 3,151 for National Diploma and 1,917 for Higher National Diploma.

Also speaking, the polytechnic Registrar, Kasimu Salihu, congratulated the newly-admitted students, and warned that the institution valued discipline and decorum.

Salihu said: “We do not condone indecent dressing, and any violation of this rule will attract penalties.

“It is essential that you adhere to our dress code to maintain a conducive learning environment.”
