The Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) has offered free legal representation to 5,595 detainees as part of its efforts to improve access to justice in Nigeria.
PPDC’s Chief Executive Officer, Lucy Abagi, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja during the Law for Humanity Summit 2025.
She said 164 detainees regained their freedom after years in custody, thanks to the organisation’s network of pro bono lawyers.
Abagi said the initiative aims to tackle Nigeria’s high rate of pre-trial detention — one of the most persistent issues in the country’s criminal justice system.
She noted that many citizens remain in detention for months or years without trial, often for minor offences.
Through its Reforming Pre-trial Detention in Nigeria (RPDN II) project, PPDC trained over 330 law clinicians from 10 universities, engaged more than 200 pro bono lawyers, and deployed 50 police duty solicitors across five states.
“These young lawyers have provided legal support to 15,314 people and secured bail for 8,552 detainees,” Abagi said.
“Each number represents a life restored, a family reunited, and renewed faith in justice.”
She added that the RPDN II project is supported by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and implemented in collaboration with key justice institutions in Nigeria.
Abagi called for stronger collaboration between government, development partners, and the private sector to sustain access to justice initiatives.
“Justice cannot thrive on goodwill alone,” she said.
“It requires commitment, structure, and resources. If we truly want a fair and inclusive system, we must invest in those who give their time and expertise in service to others.”
The Director-General of the Legal Aid Council, Aliyu Abubakar, commended PPDC for its efforts, noting that the initiative would enhance access to justice and strengthen Nigeria’s legal system.
