The Presidency has declared that the former governor of Benue State, George Akume, remained the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the declaration via a statement issued on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
There have been reports that Akume stepped down as SGF to become the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
This followed the sudden resignation of former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje as APC National Chairman on Friday, June 27, 2025.
The party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Ali Bukar Dalori, has since been appointed as the acting National Chairman.

However, Onanuga stated that Akume remains the SGF, noting that there has been no change in the status of the former governor as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The presidential spokesman added: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, currently in Saint Lucia, has not made any new appointments.
“The information circulating about Akume’s replacement is untrue. Agents of mischief fabricated it.
“The Presidency advises Nigerians to disregard the fake news.”
