For the second time in a month, a devastating rainstorm has battered the Federal Polytechnic Idah in Kogi State, causing extensive damage to key facilities and severely disrupting academic and administrative operations.
The most recent storm, which occurred shortly after an earlier incident on June 15, 2025, further compounded the institution’s infrastructure woes. Critical buildings such as lecture halls, student hostels, and laboratories were affected, raising serious concerns about the continuity of academic activities.
According to the institution’s management, the repeated rainstorm incidents have placed an enormous burden on the polytechnic, hindering its ability to function effectively. The Chairman of the Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Adetope Ademiluyi, described the damage as substantial and alarming.
“On June 15, 2025, a severe rainstorm hit the Federal Polytechnic Idah, damaging lecture halls, laboratories, and hostels. It affected both staff and student morale,” Ademiluyi said. “Given the scale of destruction, we are appealing to the federal government, corporate bodies, and the general public for urgent assistance to help rebuild and restore the institution.”
He emphasized the commitment of the current administration to deliver quality education but noted that achieving this goal requires urgent intervention from stakeholders.
Several students have also expressed concern over the worsening situation. Hadizat Zubair, a student, lamented the repeated damage to infrastructure, noting that it has significantly disrupted their academic progress.
“The persistent rainstorms have paralyzed academic activities. We appeal for swift help so the school can return to normal,” she said.
As the institution battles the aftermath of the natural disasters, there are growing calls for comprehensive support to rehabilitate damaged facilities and prevent a total collapse of academic life at the polytechnic.
