The members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have reaffirmed their determination to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Nma Odu, over alleged gross misconduct.
The lawmakers made their position known during a press briefing held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, on Friday, January 16, 2026.
The lawmakers maintained that the impeachment proceedings were constitutional and in line with their legislative responsibilities.
They dismissed criticisms of the process, insisting that the House was acting within the provisions of the law to address what they described as a political impasse in Rivers State.
The briefing came a day after the lawmakers failed to resume plenary on Thursday, exactly one week after adjourning its last sitting.
Rivers lawmakers urge colleagues to halt Fubara impeachment
The House had, at its sitting last week, initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara and his deputy over alleged gross misconduct.
The allegations included the demolition of the Assembly complex and spending public funds without legislative approval.
Initially, 26 legislators unanimously supported the impeachment notice against the governor and his deputy. Four members of the Assembly later withdrew their support for the proposed removal.
However, the four lawmakers — Minority Leader Sylvanus Nwankwo, Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency), Barile Nwakoh (Khana Constituency I), and Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor Constituency II) — have now reversed their earlier withdrawal and declared support for the impeachment.
