Robbers invade Ogun poly hostels, shoot, rape students

Armed robbers have shot and raped some students of the Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade in the Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State following an attack on their hostels.

It was gathered that the students were attacked at about 1 a.m. two Fridays ago and last Sunday when the robbers invaded Ipara-Remo and Ode-Remo communities, hosting some students of the polytechnic

The robbers were said to have entered into students’ hostels, carted away their belongings, molested some female students, and shot some others, who were later rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Speaking on the incident, some students disclosed that the robbery attacks had become a recurring decimal in the communities over time but it got to its peak during last Sunday’s attack.

A member of the polytechnic management, who spoke on condition of anonymity on Sunday, disclosed that the management was aware of the attack, adding that efforts were ongoing to curtail security breaches within the communities.

Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said the injured student had been discharged from hospital.

Odutola, however, debunked claims that a student died during the incident.

The police spokesperson said: “The robbery occurred on the same day and the student who was injured has recovered and been since discharged from the hospital.

“There was a meeting between the students and the Commissioner of Police and the CP urged them to always report incidents formally to the Divisional Police Officer and not to take law into their own hands by displaying their grievances first to their school authorities who would better notify the Ogun State Police Command.

“No student died in the attack.”
