Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed why he walked out of Portugal’s national team camp, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of twice breaking promises made to him.
The 41-year-old Portugal captain gave his account in a lengthy statement posted on X on Tuesday, saying he decided to speak directly about the circumstances surrounding his departure from the team’s latest training camp.
Ronaldo said his decision came after Jesus allegedly failed to honour an agreement on his playing time and later did not publicly clarify the situation as they had agreed.
According to Ronaldo, he had initially considered ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup and had prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese people.
However, Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença persuaded him to continue playing for the national team.
Ronaldo said he also supported the appointment of Jesus as Portugal’s new coach, believing he was the right person for the job.
“I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” Ronaldo said.
“That is why, on the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are confirming.”
The Al-Nassr forward said Jesus subsequently met with him and presented a plan for his involvement with the national team.
“He told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project,” Ronaldo said.
“He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match.”
Ronaldo said he rejected an earlier suggestion that he should remain in Portugal while the team travelled to Norway and Denmark.
He said he did not want to abandon his responsibilities as captain simply because he would not feature in the away matches.
“It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example,” he said.
Ronaldo played against Wales and was substituted during the match, handing the captain’s armband to Bruno Fernandes without protest.
But he said the situation changed on the day Portugal faced Norway.
According to Ronaldo, Jesus unexpectedly asked whether he could play for 30 minutes, despite an earlier plan for him to feature in the match against Denmark at the Dragão.
“To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes,” Ronaldo said.
“I was fully focused on my physical recovery… Without any problem. This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan — because I was only going to play on the 4th at the Dragão — but of course I said yes.
“He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes.”
Ronaldo said he warmed up from half-time but was never introduced into the game.
“The rest everyone knows. I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called. The coach had broken his word to me,” he said.
He also apologised for failing to greet Portugal supporters after the match, describing the incident as his responsibility.
“I recognise that I failed to greet the fans after the game, and that is a failure that is only my responsibility,” he said.
Ronaldo said he later held a private meeting with Jesus and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho, where they reached an agreement on how the incident would be addressed publicly.
He said Jesus agreed to clarify the situation at his next press conference and that a short list of points was prepared and approved ahead of the media briefing.
However, Ronaldo said the coach’s eventual comments did not reflect what they had agreed.
“It was the second time that he was breaking the word he had given me,” Ronaldo said.
“I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people.”
The Portugal captain apologised to his teammates and the Portuguese public for his decision to leave the camp.
He also said he accepted that the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him for the incident, insisting that his status should not exempt him from disciplinary action.
“I accept that the Federation should punish the walkout without mitigating factors,” he said, stressing that “the rules are equal for everyone.”
Ronaldo, however, dismissed the idea that his future with Portugal should be reduced to a ceremonial farewell.
He said his priority remains competing for the national team whenever he is physically fit and performing well at club level.
“When I think about the national team, what I really think about is competing,” Ronaldo said.
“Therefore, if I am physically well, playing at my club, scoring goals I hope, after serving the suspension that is applied to me, I will be available, as I always have been until today, to compete and win for our National Team.”
“This is, believe me, the purest of truths,” he added.
