Sanusi’s law result: Emirate Council dismisses viral carry-over claim

The Kano Emirate Council has dismissed a viral social media video alleging that Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II has a carry-over in one of his courses in the Bachelor of Laws programme at Northwest University Kano.

The video, which began circulating on social media on Sunday, purportedly suggested that the emir had failed to meet the academic requirements for one of his courses and would need to retake the examination.

The Emirate Council described the claim as false, saying the footage was taken during an academic programme Sanusi attended at the university.

Secretary in the Office of the Emir, Muhammad Ado, said the emir attended a programme organised by law students at the university on Saturday, where a student recorded the video that was later circulated online with misleading claims attached about his academic performance.

“We attended a programme organised by Law Students in the university on Saturday, and a student took the video. But it’s not true,” Ado said.

He said Sanusi, who enrolled as a 200-level undergraduate student in the LL.B programme combining Common Law and Sharia, is progressing well in his studies.

“In our calculations, it remains only one point for the Emir to attain first class,” Ado said, adding that former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, was among those who attended the programme as a visiting lecturer.

A student, Ibrahim Abubakar-Danmasani, said examinations had not commenced at the institution as of the time the claim circulated, and were expected to begin on Monday, making the claim that the emir had already obtained a carry-over in the current examination cycle unfounded.

Sources within the university corroborated the Emirate Council’s position, alleging the footage was circulated by some youths as an act of mischief that did not reflect Sanusi’s academic standing.

The controversy comes amid public interest in the emir’s return to formal university education. Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has continued his studies while carrying out his traditional responsibilities as Emir of Kano.

The Emirate Council urged the public to disregard the viral claim, saying the video should not be interpreted as evidence of any academic deficiency on the part of the emir.
