Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum
The National Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria (NASWDEN) has challenged Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum to provide evidence linking scrap metal scavengers to the alleged theft of electrical cables worth N3bn in the state.
The association’s Deputy National President, Aminu Hassan Soja, said the allegation was unfair and demanded that the state government disclose details of the project affected by the reported theft.
In a statement on Sunday, Soja asked the government to identify the contractor responsible for the project, state when it was executed, confirm whether the cables were supplied and installed, and specify when the alleged theft occurred.
He also questioned the basis of the allegation, noting that scrap metal activities had reportedly been prohibited in Borno State for more than three years.
“Governor Zulum must not use scrap dealers as scapegoats to conceal the government’s failures in providing basic social amenities and infrastructure. You cannot accuse an entire industry without presenting credible evidence,” he said.
NASWDEN rejected what it described as attempts to associate its members with criminal activities, insisting that it represents legitimate scrap and waste dealers operating across the country.
Soja also distanced the association from Boko Haram and all forms of terrorism, warning that unsubstantiated allegations could damage the reputation of law-abiding operators in the sector.
The association urged the Borno State Government to investigate the alleged theft, identify those responsible and prosecute them if a crime was established, rather than making blanket accusations against scrap dealers.
The dispute follows the state government’s allegation that scrap metal scavengers were involved in the theft of electrical cables valued at N3bn, a claim NASWDEN has strongly disputed.
