Nine suspects have been arrested in Anambra State after security operatives intercepted two vehicles carrying three AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun and charms.
The suspects, comprising seven men and two women, were apprehended on Friday during a stop-and-search operation in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area.
The joint security team, made up of personnel from the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Immigration Service and the Agunechemba Security Outfit, stopped and searched a custom-coloured Toyota Sienna and an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4.
Three AK-47 rifles, a pump-action firearm, charms and other items were reportedly found during the search.
The suspects and the recovered weapons were taken into custody as authorities commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding their possession of the firearms.
The police said the suspects claimed during preliminary questioning that they were security personnel from a neighbouring state.
However, the command said they could not satisfactorily establish their identities, security affiliations or explain why they were in Anambra with the firearms.
The authorities said further investigation would determine the suspects’ identities and possible links to criminal activities.
