The Nigerian Senate has approved two landmark bills aimed at strengthening the country’s higher education sector through the creation of new specialized federal universities.
The first bill seeks to establish the Federal University of Information Technology in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, while the second provides for the creation of the Federal University of Education (Technical) in Gombe, Gombe State.
The approval followed the presentation and adoption of the reports by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, chaired by Senator Dandutse Muntari (Katsina South).

The bill for the Federal University of Information Technology was sponsored by Senator Jide Ipinsagba (Ondo North).
It aims to upgrade the current Federal Science Technical College in Ikare-Akoko to a full-fledged university, offering academic and professional programmes in information technology, computer science, programming, cybersecurity, and related fields.
The goal is to equip students with the technical skills necessary to meet Nigeria’s technological demands and drive innovation.
Similarly, the bill establishing the Federal University of Education (Technical), Gombe—sponsored by Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo (Gombe North)—seeks to transform the Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe, into a university.
The institution will focus on technical education, teacher training, and global best practices in pedagogy, with the aim of producing highly skilled educators.
Senator Muntari noted that both bills enjoyed widespread backing during public hearings, receiving strong support from key stakeholders in the education sector.
In plenary, the Senate overwhelmingly supported the passage of both bills.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the initiative, stating that the creation of these institutions would not only enhance the nation’s education system but also address youth unemployment and contribute to national security.
He also praised Senator Muntari for his commitment to advancing education in Nigeria.
