The Nigerian Senate has dismissed reports of a clash between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, insisting there is no division within its leadership.
Recent media claims suggested that both leaders had a heated disagreement during a closed-door session last Wednesday, allegedly over Akpabio’s leadership style. The session was reportedly convened to discuss the timing of the Senate’s annual recess.
However, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), refuted the claims, describing them as a misrepresentation of parliamentary procedures.
He explained that debates—often spirited—are a standard feature of legislative processes across the world and should not be mistaken for personal altercations or signs of disunity.
“Robust discussions in the chamber or committee rooms are essential to the legislative process and are aimed solely at advancing the interests of over 230 million Nigerians,” Adaramodu stated.
He emphasized that such debates reflect the Senate’s commitment to thorough scrutiny of bills, motions, and policies and should not be interpreted as evidence of conflict within its leadership.
