The Senate has indefinitely postponed its National Security Summit scheduled for October 12 and 13 following the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State that claimed 32 lives.

The decision was announced on Tuesday by the Senate Leader and Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the National Security Summit, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

The Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft crashed in Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, killing 25 passengers and seven crew members.

The Senate said the postponement was to align with the three-day national mourning declared by President Bola Tinubu in honour of the victims.

Tinubu also directed that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country following the tragedy.

The Senate’s ad-hoc committee had completed preparations for the summit after concluding zonal public hearings across the country.

The summit is expected to bring together key stakeholders to deliberate on Nigeria’s security challenges and develop practical measures to protect lives and property.

The Senate expressed condolences to Tinubu, the Armed Forces, the Nigerian Air Force and the families of the personnel who died in the crash.

Bamidele said a new date for the summit would be announced in due course, while urging stakeholders to stand with the nation during the period of mourning.
