Seven killed, 60 injured in Ogun, Kano road crashes

At least seven people have died and 60 others sustained injuries in separate road accidents recorded in Ogun and Kano states.

In Ogun, a crash along the Sagamu–Siun–Abeokuta Expressway at the Onipepeye axis on Saturday claimed three lives and left seven others injured.

The incident involved a truck and a passenger vehicle, with preliminary findings linking the crash to speeding and loss of control.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun said the victims were taken to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta, where the injured are receiving treatment, while the deceased were deposited in the morgue.

According to the state spokesperson of the corps, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes to carry out rescue operations.

Meanwhile, in Kano State, the FRSC confirmed that two separate accidents resulted in four deaths and 53 injuries.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, said the first incident occurred along the Eastern Bypass near the Muhammadu Buhari Interchange, involving a trailer transporting goods, animals, and passengers.

The vehicle reportedly lost control due to speeding, leaving two people dead and dozens injured.

A second crash on Saturday, also involving a trailer travelling towards Lagos, led to two more fatalities and multiple injuries after the driver lost control at a junction.

Victims from both incidents were taken to hospitals in Kano for treatment.

Reacting to the incidents, the Kano Sector Commander, Idris Lawal, warned against traffic violations, particularly the unsafe practice of conveying passengers in trailers meant for cargo.

Authorities have urged motorists and transport operators to obey speed limits, maintain their vehicles properly, and prioritise safety to prevent further tragedies.
