Seven killed in Lagos-Ibadan Expressway crash

Seven people have been killed and two others injured in a multiple-vehicle crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Sector Command, said the fatal crash occurred at about 12:03 a.m. on Monday along the Ibafo-Lagos corridor, around Kara, Ibafo.

According to a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, nine men were involved in the crash, which involved three vehicles: a white HOWO CNG/CIMC ENRIC truck, a white MACK trailer and a Mitsubishi Canter with registration number JJJ920YA.

The FRSC said seven of the nine people involved died in the crash, while the remaining two sustained injuries.

The agency said its Ibafo Outpost Command received information about the incident at about 4:04 a.m. and arrived at the scene approximately five minutes later.

The crash was classified as a fatal multiple road traffic crash, with preliminary findings indicating speed violation as the probable cause. The FRSC, however, said further investigation would be required to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

The bodies of the deceased were evacuated from the scene by the Ogun State Ambulance Service, while the two injured victims were taken to a medical facility for treatment.

The FRSC said the vehicles involved were subsequently handed over to the Motor Traffic Division of the Nigeria Police Force in Ibafo for further investigation and necessary action.

The Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Ogunjobi urged motorists, particularly drivers of articulated vehicles, to avoid excessive speed and maintain adequate following distances to reduce the risk of collisions.

He also advised motorists travelling at night to exercise greater caution, stressing that poor visibility, fatigue and other night-driving hazards could increase the likelihood of road crashes.

The FRSC reiterated its appeal to road users to obey traffic regulations and adopt safe driving practices, particularly on major highways such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
