Shettima visits Kwara to assess aftermath of Woro village attack

Vice President Kashim Shettima on Saturday arrived in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, to assess the situation following last Tuesday’s deadly attack on Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area, where more than 100 residents were reportedly killed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents.

Shettima was received at the Tunde Idiagbon International Airport by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Senator Sadiq Umar, who represents Kwara North, and other top government officials.

During the visit, the vice president is scheduled to meet with key stakeholders, including the village head of Woro, the Emir of Kaiama, local government authorities, and security chiefs, as part of efforts to evaluate the damage and coordinate response measures.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier directed the immediate deployment of a battalion of soldiers to the area to restore security and prevent further attacks.

The assailants reportedly stormed the community, set homes ablaze and killed scores of residents, while an unspecified number of women and girls were abducted.

Authorities confirmed that at least 75 victims were buried on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites. Many others sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment, with some already discharged.

The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from both local and international communities, with calls for strengthened security and protection for vulnerable rural areas.
