Hundreds of members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Saturday staged a massive protest in Kano, condemning a viral statement attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting plans for a military strike on Nigeria.
The protesters, who marched through major streets in Kano metropolis, chanted anti-U.S. slogans and carried placards rejecting what they described as a “provocative and dangerous” comment.
Mobilisation for the protest was coordinated through Hausa-language social media platforms, where posts alleged that the U.S. was preparing to attack Nigeria.
Videos circulating online showed large groups of youths calling for international condemnation of Trump’s alleged remarks and urging Nigerians to defend the nation’s sovereignty.
“This statement is unacceptable.
“No foreign power has the right to threaten Nigeria.
“We are here to show our total rejection of external aggression,” one protester said.
Observers have noted that the incident highlights rising anti-U.S. sentiment in parts of northern Nigeria, driven by misinformation, distrust of Western governments, and religiously charged narratives.
Analysts warn that unchecked rhetoric of this kind could heighten tensions and be exploited by extremist or political actors.
