Doctors at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital have successfully carried out the hospital’s first total hip replacement surgery on a young man living with sickle cell disease.
The patient developed avascular necrosis, a condition in which part of the bone dies because of inadequate blood supply, affecting the upper end of his thigh bone.
The specialised procedure was performed on Saturday by a team led by Dr Lawan Yari. Dr Musa Abdulmalik, Dr Bashok Palagvi, Manasseh Jonah and Karumi Ibrahim were also involved in the operation.
Yobe State Commissioner for Health, Dr Muhammad Gana, announced the development on Sunday, describing the surgery as a major step forward for specialised healthcare in the state.
Gana explained that total hip replacement involves removing a damaged hip joint and replacing it with an artificial joint to restore movement and improve the patient’s quality of life.
He said the successful operation demonstrated the increasing capacity of the state’s health institutions to undertake complex medical procedures.
The commissioner also recalled another surgical milestone recorded in Yobe in May, when doctors at the Yobe State Specialist Hospital performed a major maxillofacial operation on a 40-year-old woman.
The woman had a rare non-cancerous tumour affecting her lower jawbone and required extensive surgery.
Gana linked the recent medical achievements to the state government’s investment in healthcare, including the provision of modern equipment and support for medical facilities.
He said such investments were aimed at expanding access to specialised treatment and reducing the need for residents to travel outside the state for complex medical care.
