The Sokoto State Government has set up a committee of Islamic scholars to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack on the Sheikh Musa Lukuwa Jumu’at Mosque in the Mabera area of the state.
The committee will examine the immediate and underlying causes of the religious tension linked to the incident and recommend measures to prevent further unrest.
The government disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday by the Director-General, Media and Publicity, Government House, Abubakar Bawa, in Sokoto.
According to Bawa, the committee comprises Islamic scholars who will advise the government on appropriate steps to restore peace and maintain religious harmony in the state.
As part of measures following the incident, the government ordered the immediate closure of the mosque, which it described as a crime scene, until further notice.
The state government also distanced itself from anyone who, under the guise of religion, acts in a manner considered disrespectful to Prophet Muhammad, his parents, household and companions.
“The government dissociates itself from any person, regardless of status, who hides under the pretext of religion to undermine or disrespect Prophet Muhammad, his parents, household and companions,” Bawa said.
He added that the state government remained committed to showing “total obedience and respect” to the Prophet, his parents, household and companions.
Bawa urged residents to continue to uphold love and compassion for the Prophet while avoiding statements capable of inflaming religious tensions.
He also appealed to residents to refrain from provocative remarks that could threaten peaceful coexistence in the state.
The government, he assured, would continue to take steps to protect the lives and property of residents.
The development followed an incident at the mosque on September 11, when Sheikh Musa Lukuwa was allegedly stabbed in the neck shortly after leading the Friday congregational prayers.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, worshippers at the mosque reportedly overpowered the alleged attacker and beat him to death at the scene.
The state government’s latest move is aimed at determining the circumstances surrounding the incident and addressing the underlying tensions in the community.
