A devastating accident struck the Mile 6 Market in Jalingo, Taraba State, on Saturday when a tipper truck loaded with sand lost control and rammed into a crowd of traders and shoppers, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
The crash occurred around midday as the market buzzed with activity. Witnesses said the truck was at high speed when one of its front tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into the busy market, knocking down people and destroying stalls.
“It happened so fast,” recounted Musa Ibrahim, a local vendor. “The tyre burst and the driver just couldn’t stop it. The truck ran into the crowd.”
Emergency responders, including security forces and medical personnel, arrived promptly to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals. Several bodies were recovered from the scene, though the exact number of casualties has yet to be confirmed.
Authorities have arrested the driver of the truck, who is currently in custody as investigations are underway to determine the precise cause of the crash.
Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and notify their families.
