A man arrested by troops of Operation UDO KA in Enugu State has died after he was shot during an altercation with a soldier while allegedly attempting to seize the serviceman’s weapon.
Security sources said the incident occurred around 10:15 a.m. on June 24 along the 9th Mile–Enugu Road in Udi Local Government Area.
According to the sources, personnel of the 103 Battalion (Rear) stationed at Ugwu Onyema responded to a distress call involving a tipper driver reported to be causing a disturbance along the highway.
The suspect was subsequently apprehended and taken to a military facility for preliminary questioning. However, during the process, he reportedly became violent and engaged in a struggle with one of the soldiers.
Sources said the suspect allegedly attempted to disarm the soldier, prompting a confrontation during which he was shot.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.
Following the incident, troops reportedly reinforced security measures in the area and increased patrol activities to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
As of the time of filing this report, military authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident.
