Team Nigeria arrives in Algeria for inaugural ANOCA African schools’ games

Team Nigeria has arrived in Annaba, Algeria, to participate in the maiden edition of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) African Schools’ Games, scheduled to run from July 24 to August 5.

This was disclosed on Friday by Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), who noted that the event offers a critical platform for identifying and nurturing young sporting talents across Africa.

Nigeria is fielding 68 athletes across 10 sporting disciplines where the country is believed to have a competitive edge. The delegation is led by Amaka Ashiofu of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

The athletes will compete in Athletics, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Canoeing, Football, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Cycling, Swimming, and Badminton.

Nezianya highlighted Nigeria’s smooth journey to Annaba, in contrast to the challenges faced by other delegations who first landed in Algiers and spent up to 15 hours traveling to the host city due to delays in transportation logistics.

NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade are expected to join the team in Annaba for the grand opening ceremony.

NOC Secretary General Tunde Popoola expressed optimism about the team’s performance, noting the enthusiasm and fresh energy among the young athletes.

“There’s no pressure of past records. It’s a new platform, and these youngsters are eager to make their mark,” Popoola said.

Canoeing coach Fortune Olayiwola added that the athletes are primed to excel, especially when properly motivated. “When they are encouraged, they often perform beyond expectations,” he said.

Nezianya also commended the host nation for its hospitality, noting that Algeria offered free accommodation and visa-free entry to all 54 African countries to encourage wide participation.

Team Nigeria and other athletes are being housed at the University of El Bono Hostel, which is serving as the Games Village. The university is known for offering instruction in multiple languages including Arabic, German, Russian, and Spanish.

Describing the venue, Nezianya added, “The Games Village is located on a scenic hilltop, with an undulating landscape that provides a vibrant and picturesque environment for the athletes.”
