Tears as Arise TV anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu laid to rest in Anambra

The remains of Arise TV anchor Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu were laid to rest on Saturday amid tears and tributes in her hometown, Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Somtochukwu, who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her Abuja residence in September 2025, was buried at about 1:30 p.m. after a funeral Mass at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Agulu.

The burial was attended by family members, friends, colleagues, and dignitaries, including former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In his homily, Rev. Fr. Peter Ezewuzie urged the family to take solace in the fact that Sommie lived a meaningful life.

“The Lord who created us knows the beginning and the end. You may feel unhappy that a life has been cut short, but God’s plan is perfect,” he said.

“The maturity of life is not in how long one lives, but in the quality of life lived — and Sommie lived a quality life.”

Speaking after the Mass, Peter Obi described Sommie’s death as heartbreaking and a painful reflection of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.

“We cannot question God. When I heard of her death, I didn’t even know she was from Agulu,” Obi said.

“Before I left Birmingham yesterday, I told those with me that I was rushing back to attend the burial of one of my daughters.

“Please, always remember her and her family in your prayers.”

Her uncle, Mr. Obi Maduagwu, thanked Arise News for standing by the family since the tragedy, noting that the station had shown unwavering support.

Somtochukwu’s death had sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s media industry, where she was admired for her intelligence, professionalism, and passion for journalism.

The funeral drew journalists, officials, and community members who came to honour the young broadcaster described as a bright star whose light was cut short too soon but whose legacy will endure.
