Uncertainty looms across Nigeria’s public universities as the 14-day ultimatum issued by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to the Federal Government expires today.
The ultimatum, announced on September 28, was part of the union’s renewed effort to push the government into addressing unresolved issues in the university system.
When asked about ASUU’s next move as the deadline closed in, the union’s President, Professor Chris Piwuna, declined to comment, saying only, “No comment.” However, sources within the union revealed that the National Executive Council (NEC) may meet immediately after the ultimatum lapses to decide on the next line of action.
ASUU had earlier mobilised its members nationwide in preparation for a possible industrial action, accusing the government of indifference and failure to act on long-standing agreements.
In a circular sent to all branches, the NEC explained that during an emergency meeting on September 29, 2025, it reviewed the outcome of a referendum across its chapters and unanimously resolved to issue the 14-day ultimatum. The aim, it said, was to compel the Federal Government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement submitted since February 2025.
Despite formally communicating its resolutions to the Ministers of Labour and Education, as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), ASUU lamented the government’s continued silence.
In a message to members, Professor Piwuna expressed disappointment, noting, “I regret to inform you that there is no meaningful development deserving of any consideration to be reported.”
He stressed that the union’s position stems from frustration over the government’s failure to fulfil its promises — particularly the signing of the 2022 renegotiated agreement, improved funding for public universities, and the payment of outstanding earned academic allowances.
As the deadline expires, tension remains high on campuses nationwide, with staff and students anxiously awaiting ASUU’s next move.
