Terror Alert: Buhari meets security chiefs in Abuja

President Muhammadu Buhari is currently meeting with security chiefs to further review and strengthen the nation’s security.

Buhari suspended some of his official engagements including the inauguration of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) new Technology and Innovation complex to preside over the emergency meeting with the security chiefs.

Those in attendance at the meeting include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Boss Mustapha; the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari; and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj-Gen. Babagana Monguno (Retd).

Others are Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao.

Also in attendance are the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba; the Director-General of the Department of State Service (DSS), Yusuf Bichi; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai.

The United States Embassy, on October 23, released a security advisory on the possible terror attack on Abuja.

The U.S. security advisory said targets for the attack may include government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, and shopping malls.

It said others are hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organisations.

The United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) also advised British nationals against non-essential travels to Abuja over threats of a possible terrorist attack.

Reacting, President Buhari urged Nigerians to remain calm despite the terror alerts by the foreign missions in the country.

He stressed that while being security conscious, being alert, and careful is crucial, adding that it is also important that responsible members of society do not create situations leading to unnecessary panic.
