Five journalists and three policemen were reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs in Kano State on Saturday shortly after covering an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally.
The incident occurred around Kofar Nassarawa, behind the City Campus of North West University, as the journalists were returning to their offices from the Sani Abacha Stadium, venue of the APC programme.
The attackers allegedly wielded machetes and knives and descended on the Radio Nigeria vehicle conveying the journalists and policemen, smashing its windows and damaging parts of the bus.
A journalist with Pyramid FM, Yakubu Abubakar Gwagwarwa, who confirmed the incident, said the presence of three policemen in the vehicle did not deter the assailants.
Gwagwarwa said the vehicle had four Radio Nigeria Pyramid FM staff, a journalist from Guarantee Radio and the three policemen, whom they had given a lift from the stadium.
He said the attackers repeatedly struck the vehicle, forcing the driver to turn back in an attempt to escape.
“They continued to hit the vehicle despite the presence of security personnel and journalists inside. We had to quickly turn back, but they still followed us,” he said.
According to the journalist, the driver was injured during the attack, while some of the occupants sustained minor injuries after being hit by shards of broken glass from the smashed windows.
Gwagwarwa, however, said he did not believe the journalists were specifically targeted, describing the incident as a random attack and suggesting that other people could have been assaulted in the area.
The journalists had earlier covered an APC event at the Sani Abacha Stadium, where the Tinubu Support Group was launched in Kano and some political chieftains were received into the party.
Saturday’s incident is the latest in a series of reported attacks associated with political activities in Kano.
At least three people were reportedly killed by suspected political thugs several months ago on the day of the inauguration of a new Deputy Governor in the state.
The police had yet to publicly comment on Saturday’s attack as of the time of filing this report.
