Tinubu calls for unity, fairness as APC begins nationwide primaries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to embrace unity, fairness, and sportsmanship as the party commences its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement released from the State House on Thursday, Tinubu described the primaries as a defining moment for the ruling party, saying the exercise would test the APC’s strength, cohesion, and democratic values.

The President noted that the primaries, beginning with House of Representatives contests and ending with the presidential primary on May 25, were not just routine political exercises but an opportunity for the party to reaffirm its founding ideals.

“We founded the APC on the firm principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, and personal devotion and sacrifice,” Tinubu said. “These principles have helped us emerge stronger after every election cycle, and we must consolidate on them.”

Tinubu praised ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements in some contests, describing the move as a strategy capable of reducing internal disputes and strengthening party unity.

While encouraging members to take advantage of consensus where possible, the President stressed that where contests become necessary, aspirants and delegates must conduct themselves peacefully and democratically.

“We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity,” he warned. “In every contest, there will be winners and losers.”

The President urged victorious aspirants not to mock opponents, while advising those who lose to remain loyal to the party and prepare for future opportunities instead of creating divisions.

“Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” he added.

Tinubu also directed party leaders, governors, and stakeholders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants throughout the primary process.

He emphasized the importance of inclusion, calling for greater support for women and youths seeking elective positions under the APC platform.

“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart,” the President stated, urging delegates and party leaders to give the two groups special consideration during the primaries.

Tinubu further cautioned security agencies to remain professional and avoid interfering in the political process beyond maintaining peace and order.

The President expressed optimism that the APC would emerge stronger after the exercise and pledged to work with successful candidates ahead of the general election.
