Tinubu celebrates Afenifere leader Fasoranti at 99

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as the respected Yoruba leader marks his 99th birthday.

In a statement released on Saturday, May 10, 2025, Tinubu described Pa Fasoranti as a rare Nigerian who dedicated his life to public service, education, and the advancement of Yoruba ideals of honour, integrity, and progressive governance.

“Today, I rejoice with the family, political associates, and friends of our dear father, leader and patriarch, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, in celebrating his remarkable journey of 99 years on earth,” Tinubu said.

He praised Baba Fasoranti’s outstanding contributions to education, recalling his time as a teacher, principal, and founder of Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School, institutions that still stand today as legacies of his commitment to learning and community development.

Tinubu also highlighted Fasoranti’s political journey, beginning with his association with Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group and later, the Unity Party of Nigeria.

He served as Commissioner for Finance under Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin’s administration in Ondo State between 1979 and 1983, where he was credited with sound fiscal management and effective implementation of key development programmes.

The president further lauded Pa Fasoranti’s courage during Nigeria’s military era, particularly his resistance against the dictatorship of late General Sani Abacha through his involvement with pro-democracy groups such as Afenifere and NADECO.

“Baba and his colleagues’ resilience inspired and strengthened us, the younger ones,” Tinubu stated.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with the nonagenarian, Tinubu expressed deep gratitude for Fasoranti’s support during his presidential bid, saying, “When I decided to run for the presidency, I remain deeply grateful for his blessings, unflinching support, and belief in my vision for our country.”

Tinubu concluded his tribute by encouraging Nigerians to emulate Baba Fasoranti’s life of courage, service, and leadership, and prayed for more wise elders in Nigerian communities.

“Happy birthday to our dear leader and father. May our communities never lack wise elders such as Baba Fasoranti,” he said.
