President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked the Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to restore peace and reinforce security operations across the country.
The President gave the charge on Wednesday at the State House during the decoration ceremony of Disu as Acting IGP, following the retirement of Kayode Egbetokun. Disu’s appointment is subject to ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The council is expected to meet next week.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu said he was confident in Disu’s capacity to lead the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.
He urged the Acting IGP to rebuild public trust in the police and work collaboratively with other security agencies to improve safety nationwide.
“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” Tinubu added.
The President also charged Disu to align policing strategies with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that Nigeria continues to grapple with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said.
Tinubu paid tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, thanking him for his service and contribution to maintaining law and order. He encouraged him to offer guidance to his successor.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President stated, wishing Egbetokun and his family well.
Among those present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; and retired Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, alongside senior government officials and family members of the Acting IGP.
