President Bola Tinubu has commended Nigerian editors for their pivotal role in sustaining democracy and national development, urging them to continue exercising their duties with responsibility, fairness, and a strong sense of national purpose.
Speaking at the 2025 Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors held at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Tinubu described journalism in Nigeria as more than a profession, calling it an “instrument of national awakening.”
He lauded the courage and resilience of journalists who, over the decades, stood up against colonial injustice and military dictatorship, adding that their sacrifices laid the foundation for the country’s democratic system.
The president said: “Throughout our history, journalism in Nigeria has been more than a profession. It has been an instrument of national awakening.
“Many journalists endured intimidation, detention, and personal hardship in defence of the public good. Their sacrifices are part of the foundation upon which our democracy rests today. We honour them not only in memory but also by remaining committed to the values they upheld.”

Tinubu emphasised that the media holds immense power in shaping public perception and national discourse, urging editors to wield that influence with integrity.
Tinubu added: “As editors and managers of the national information space, you shape narratives. You influence public understanding. You decide what becomes national focus and how our collective challenges are interpreted. The weight of that responsibility is significant. It must be exercised with wisdom, fairness and a strong sense of national duty.
“I urge you, therefore, to continue upholding the highest standards of journalism. Report boldly, but do so truthfully. Critique government policy but do so with knowledge and fairness. Your aim must never be to tear down, but to help build a better society.”
The president also expressed concern over the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age, saying the media must uphold verification and professionalism to protect public trust.
Reiterating his administration’s focus on economic reforms and stability, Tinubu said his government was committed to building a strong, inclusive economy while fostering unity and cooperation across all sectors.
He, therefore, enjoined editors to continue setting high professional standards, saying their work remains vital to the progress and stability of Nigeria.
