Tinubu to attend AFCON final in Cote d’Ivoire

President Bola Tinubu has been listed among the dignitaries to attend the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire on Sunday.

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, made this known at a press conference in Abidjan on Friday, February 9, 2024.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will lock horns with hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the AFCON final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Ebimpe on Sunday, February 11.

Motsepe, while responding to a question, said Vice President Kashim Shettima told him that Tinubu would come for the final game on Sunday.

He said: “I was with the Vice President (Kasheem Shettima) on Wednesday and he said that Nigeria’s president will come for the final.

“I was sitting next to the Vice President during the Nigeria-South Africa game. While I can’t show excitement when any nation scores, they said they could see my happiness. And yes, I am always happy.”

When asked if Africa could host the World Cup again, the CAF President said: “Nigeria must put in a bid.”

Some government officials and dignitaries from Nigeria have travelled to Cote d’Ivoire to support the Super Eagles in the ongoing AFCON.

Notable among them are Shettima; Senate President, Godswill Akpabio; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; and the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi; among others.
