Tinubu to meet Trump over alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria

The Presidency has confirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will soon hold talks with U.S. President Donald Trump following claims of alleged “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

This was disclosed on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

Bwala said the meeting is part of efforts to clarify the U.S. government’s concerns about alleged targeted attacks on Christians, adding that arrangements are underway for the two leaders to meet either at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja or at the White House in Washington D.C.

“The President will meet with President Trump soon to address these concerns and provide clarity. The narrative that terrorists are targeting only Christians in Nigeria must be properly examined because terrorism affects people of all faiths and even those with no faith,” Bwala stated.

Trump had recently labelled Nigeria as a “country of particular concern”, alleging systematic killings of Christians in parts of the North. He also warned that the U.S. could suspend aid and consider additional measures if the Nigerian government fails to end the violence.

In response, the Nigerian government rejected Trump’s claims, maintaining that insecurity in the country affects all citizens regardless of religion or ethnicity.

Bwala further emphasized that President Tinubu has achieved “massive results” in the fight against terrorism and banditry, noting that the administration remains open to constructive dialogue with international partners, including the United States.

Although the exact date of the meeting has not been confirmed, the Presidency said it is expected to take place in the coming days amid growing global attention on Nigeria’s security situation and concerns over religious freedom.

Whether Trump will agree to the meeting — or reconsider his threat of sanctions — remains to be seen.
