Tinubu’s govt frustrating me — Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Peter Obi, has claimed that persistent harassment and intimidation by the current administration could prevent him from participating in the next presidential race.

Obi made the remarks during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, saying he could “not even be alive” by the time the 2027 election is held.

Asked whether he feared he might not emerge as a candidate, the former Anambra State governor replied that his concerns extended beyond politics.

“Not even a candidate. I might not even be alive. Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. There is even a possibility that, if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” he said.

He maintained that he was not making a direct accusation against the government but alleged that he experiences constant obstruction in his public activities.

According to Obi, the alleged pressure is not limited to him but also affects other opposition figures across the country.

He further claimed that he had been denied privileges he ordinarily should enjoy and cited an incident at an airport where he said officials locked his vehicle while leaving others untouched.

Obi also alleged that some associates now avoid greeting him publicly or inviting him to family events because they fear being identified with him.

According to him, some supporters have even advised him to stay away from ceremonies such as weddings to avoid attracting unwanted attention.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegations during the interview.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had not responded to Obi’s claims.
