Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said President Bola Tinubu’s second term, if re-elected in 2027, will be a unity government, citing the inclusion of opposition figures in the All Progressives Congress presidential campaign council.
Akpabio made the statement while reacting to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele’s remarks on the composition of the campaign council, which features politicians from different parties.
He described the development as historic, arguing that no sitting president had constituted a campaign council involving members of other political parties since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999.
“This is not just an inclusive government in terms of infrastructure, revenue allocation, and reforms. It is also an inclusive government in terms of unity of purpose in democracy,” Akpabio said.
He added that the composition of the council pointed to a second Tinubu administration built around a broader political coalition.
“What we are going to witness is evidence that his second term is going to be a unity government, just like his campaign council is a unity campaign council made up of almost all the political parties in the country,” he said.
Akpabio congratulated Tinubu, APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda and leaders of the participating parties, saying the arrangement could offer an example for other African countries.
He also welcomed the participation of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike in the campaign council.
According to him, their involvement showed that governance and performance should not be determined solely by party affiliation.
“I can imagine how even a professor and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Soludo, will add his ideas to the next administration so that Nigeria will be better. This is the way Nigeria should be,” Akpabio said.
Earlier, Bamidele had described the campaign council as a historic coalition involving politicians from the APC, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Peoples Democratic Party and Accord Party.
Moving a motion for the Senate to adjourn until Thursday, Bamidele said the council would include Soludo as a state coordinator representing APGA and Adeleke as a state coordinator representing the Accord Party.
He also said Wike would serve as the campaign coordinator for the Federal Capital Territory.
Bamidele described the arrangement as a “rainbow coalition” and expressed hope that the campaign would focus on ideas and strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.
The APC campaign council’s composition comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which Tinubu is expected to seek re-election.
