Troops foil IPOB attack in Imo, kill terrorists in Zamfara

The troops of 34 Artillery Brigade, operating in 82 Division Nigerian Army, have foiled an attack by the members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on its Forward Operating Base at Ukwuorji, along Owerril-Onitsha expressway in Imo State.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

Nwachukwu noted that IPOB members attempted the attack on the troops on Sunday, August 20, but met their waterloo after they came under the superior firepower of the soldiers.

He said the troops neutralised one of the gunmen and apprehended two, while others fled.

He listed items recovered at the scene of the shootout to include one vehicle, a mobile phone, machete, nine empty cases of expended 7.62 mm special ammunition, and one empty case of expended 12.7mm ammunition.

The army spokesperson added that a Boko Haram fighter and his wife surrendered to troops of 26 Task Force Brigade Garrison in Gwoza area of Borno State, following the troops’ aggressive combat operations against insurgents in the North-East.

Nwachukwu disclosed that the troops recovered one AK 47 Rifle and 10 Live rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition from the surrendered terrorist.

In the North West, Nwachukwu said the troops of 1 Brigade Garrison operating under 8 Division, on Monday, August 21, ambushed insurgents at Bobo village in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The army spokesperson stated that the troops, acting on actionable intelligence, ambushed the insurgents who were on a mission to attack the village.

Nwachukwu added that two terrorists were killed, while two AK 47 Rifles and four motorcycles were recovered.

 

Hem therefore, enjoined all law-abiding citizens to support the Nigerian Army’s operations to enhance security across the country.
