Two senior members of a terrorist group have been killed during a military operation in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The operation was conducted in the early hours of Monday by troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, following intelligence on the location of a terrorist camp in the area.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who cited security sources, the troops engaged the group after reaching its hideout and overwhelmed the terrorists with superior firepower.

Two members of the syndicate were killed in the encounter. They were identified as Hamisu, popularly known as Mamiyo, and Umar Bocho.

Mamiyo was reportedly a major arms supplier and the second-in-command to terrorist commander Kachalla Muhammadu Filani, while Bocho was said to be one of Filani’s senior lieutenants.

Makama reported that Filani managed to escape from the scene but sustained severe gunshot wounds during the confrontation.

The troops also recovered and destroyed two motorcycles reportedly belonging to the terrorists.

Following the operation, security forces launched a search for Filani and other members of the group who escaped into the surrounding areas.

Residents of Matazu and neighbouring communities have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons, particularly anyone seeking medical attention for unexplained gunshot injuries.

Medical workers were similarly advised to alert security agencies if individuals with suspicious gunshot wounds present themselves for treatment.

Makama reported that troops were continuing clearance and mop-up operations in the area as security forces worked to prevent the fleeing terrorists from regrouping.
