Three students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) have been confirmed dead, while seven others were injured after a sand-laden truck lost control and rammed into multiple vehicles at Powerline Junction, inward Ikorodu Roundabout, Lagos.

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said the crash occurred when the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to plough into a Toyota Corolla, an MPV bus, and four tricycles.

“The tipper, travelling at high speed, suffered brake failure and lost control, colliding with several vehicles and tricycles.

Three LASUSTECH students — two males and one female — died instantly. Seven others, including tricycle operators, sustained serious injuries,” Taofiq stated.

Emergency teams from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Police rescued the injured victims and took them to nearby hospitals, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the General Hospital, Ikorodu.

The wreckage was cleared to restore normal traffic flow.

LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and blamed the crash on avoidable recklessness, overspeeding, and poor vehicle maintenance.

He warned that continued disregard for safety regulations would keep endangering lives across Lagos roads.

Friday’s tragedy came barely a day after another truck lost control on the Otedola Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, injuring eight people.
