APM Terminals Apapa, in partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority, has launched a drug and alcohol testing campaign targeting truck drivers operating within the Apapa port corridor.
The initiative, aimed at improving safety at Nigeria’s busiest seaport, focuses on ensuring that drivers handling heavy-duty vehicles are fit and alert while on duty.
Lagos Port Manager, Adebowale Ibrahim, said the exercise is critical to maintaining a safe port environment, stressing that driver alertness plays a key role in preventing accidents involving trucks, cargo, and port infrastructure.
He noted that regular testing would serve as a deterrent against substance abuse among drivers and reduce safety risks across port operations.
Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat, said the campaign is part of broader efforts to sustain high safety standards at the terminal.
According to him, the company recently recorded 636 days without a lost-time injury and is extending safety protocols to external truck drivers to preserve that record.
He warned that driving under the influence of alcohol poses serious risks not only to drivers but also to other road users, terminal workers, and critical port assets, adding that even a single lapse could result in significant incidents.
The screening exercise, conducted at the port entrance with support from security and health officials, involves breathalyser tests for drivers.
Officials disclosed that out of 30 drivers tested in the latest round, three were found to be under the influence of alcohol—an improvement compared to previous assessments.
The campaign underscores a joint commitment by port authorities and operators to strengthen safety, reduce risks, and promote responsible behaviour among transport operators within the port environment.
