The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has directed its members to disregard the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s order for an indefinite strike over the dispute between the FCT Administration (FCTA) and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
The NLC had directed public and private sector workers in the FCT to commence an indefinite strike on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, over the dispute.
However, the TUC said it was not consulted before the decision was taken and did not participate in the meeting that produced the strike directive.
In a statement, the TUC FCT Council said it was not a party to the industrial action and urged its affiliate unions and members to resume or continue their normal duties.
It also warned members against intimidation or coercion to join the strike, directing them to report any such incidents to the council’s secretariat.
The council further instructed affiliate leaders to disregard directives to establish enforcement committees unless such orders came from the TUC FCT leadership.
It urged workers to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, adding that any further guidance would come from its leadership if the situation changed.
While expressing concern over the welfare of teachers and other workers, the TUC said the dispute should be resolved through consultation and established industrial relations channels.
The council warned that prolonged industrial action could disrupt children’s access to education, stressing the need for a resolution that protects the interests of workers and students.
