Two die as refuse dump collapses on Calabar building

Two occupants of a building have died after a massive refuse dump collapsed onto the structure at Ikot Effanga, along the Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, according to the Cross River State Police Command.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said officers who responded to the scene discovered that the building, reportedly located in a valley, had been hit by the collapsed refuse.

Two occupants were trapped in the building and later found dead.

One of the victims was identified as a man, Nfon Imé, while the identity of the female victim had yet to be established.

Police said the bodies were recovered and deposited at a mortuary.

The command has commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including factors that may have contributed to the incident.

The police appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid speculation while the investigation continues, promising to provide further information once the facts are verified.
