Two domestic workers, Sarah James (28) and Jacob Dauda (32), were on Thursday arraigned before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing valuables worth N2.3 million from their employer’s home.
The defendants, who reside in Mahuta, Kaduna, are facing charges of conspiracy and theft. They pleaded not guilty to both charges.
According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Chidi Leo, the incident occurred on July 10 in the Barnawa area of Kaduna.
He told the court that the defendants allegedly stole jewellery, two television sets, four ceiling fans, six pairs of shoes, and foodstuffs — all belonging to their employer, Mrs. Charity Musa.
Leo stated that the duo took advantage of their employer’s absence from town to commit the crime.
He said the offences violate Sections 58 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017.
Section 58 prescribes up to two years imprisonment for conspiracy, while Section 217 carries a penalty of up to seven years for theft, if found guilty.
Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel granted bail to each of the defendants in the sum of N200,000, with two sureties.
The sureties must be gainfully employed, reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and provide evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government for the past three years.
The case was adjourned until August 21 for hearing.
