Two ISWAP fighters surrender, hand over rifles in Borno

Two suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have surrendered to Nigerian Army troops in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State.

The men, identified as 20-year-old Jidda Modu and 21-year-old Kaka Kawu, surrendered to troops of Headquarters Sector 3 at Charlie 4, Monguno town, at about 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday, September 1.

According to security sources, the duo arrived at the military location with two AK-47 rifles, two magazines and eight rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

Troops also recovered five mobile phones of different brands, including Infinix, Tecno, Samsung and Redmi, as well as a Tecno button phone.

Other items found in their possession were a pair of earbuds, a power bank, a Zenith Bank ATM card, a memory card, a USB cable, two head warmers and a bag.

Preliminary questioning indicated that Modu and Kawu were part of a group of about 10 ISWAP members who left their camp in Arinna Chiki with the intention of surrendering to the authorities.

The surrendered fighters and the recovered items have been handed over to Headquarters Sector 3 for further investigation and necessary action.

Their surrender comes as troops continue counter-insurgency operations under Operation Hadin Kai, with the military sustaining pressure on terrorist groups operating in the North-East.
