Two Nigerian swimmers, Clinton Opute from Delta State and Collins Ebingha from Bayelsa, have been awarded international training scholarships by World Aquatics, the global governing body for swimming.
The scholarships, part of the federation’s elite development programme, will give the athletes access to top-tier training facilities in Europe to prepare them for major international competitions, including the Olympic Games.
According to programme details, Ebingha’s scholarship runs from September 1, 2025, to August 31, 2026, while Opute’s extends from September 1, 2025, to June 30, 2028, in Hungary and France respectively.
The recognition highlights Nigeria’s steady progress in swimming development, coming on the heels of strong performances at the 2024 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, where Opute, Ebingha, and Abduljabar Adama of Ogun State emerged as standout athletes.
Sports stakeholders say the milestone reflects the strategic development drive of the National Sports Commission (NSC), under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, and the Nigeria Swimming Federation’s commitment to nurturing homegrown talents.
World Aquatics reserves its scholarships for athletes above 18 years who show exceptional promise and realistic Olympic prospects.
The selection of Opute and Ebingha is therefore seen as both a recognition of their potential and proof of Nigeria’s rising profile in international swimming.
