Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested two elderly men—aged 83 and 78—during separate anti-drug operations in Abia and Ekiti states.
The agency said 83-year-old Pa John Ofiel was apprehended on April 28 during a raid at Samek area by Powerline in Aba, Abia State, following intelligence linking him to illicit drug sales.
About 700 grams of skunk, a strain of cannabis packaged in retail sachets, were recovered from him. The suspect reportedly told operatives he was previously a shoemaker before venturing into drug trafficking.
In a similar operation in Ekiti State, NDLEA officers arrested 78-year-old Ogunjobi Samuel on April 30 at his residence in Ilupeju-Ekiti. About 350 grams of skunk were recovered during the raid.
The arrests were part of a wider nationwide crackdown on illicit drug trafficking by the agency.
Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives also intensified enforcement actions in other parts of the country, targeting suspected traffickers and intercepting various quantities of illegal substances.
Chairman of the agency, Mohamed Buba Marwa, commended officers involved in the operations, urging them to sustain the momentum in tackling drug-related crimes.
