UBA rallies staff across 20 African countries for environmental clean-up

United Bank for Africa Plc has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and employee wellbeing by mobilising thousands of workers across its operations in 20 African countries for the latest edition of its flagship wellness initiative, “Jogging to Bond.”

This year’s event coincided with the 60th birthday of the bank’s Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oliver Alawuba, who marked the occasion alongside staff members.

Held under the theme “The Power Within U,” the quarterly programme featured fitness activities, team-building exercises, community service and environmental campaigns across the bank’s African operations.

A major highlight was a coordinated environmental clean-up exercise carried out simultaneously in cities including Lagos, Accra, Nairobi and Dakar, where UBA employees cleaned public spaces as part of the bank’s commitment to environmental sustainability and community development.

According to the bank, the initiative aligns with its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) agenda by combining employee engagement with community service.

Speaking during the event, Alawuba said the programme reflects UBA’s shared values and commitment to the communities it serves.

“There is no place I would rather be on my birthday than here, surrounded by the incredible people who make UBA what it is today. Our greatest strength lies in our people, in the passion, energy and sense of purpose that unite us across Africa,” he said.

He added that activities such as exercising and serving communities together promote teamwork, healthier lifestyles and stronger relationships with customers and host communities.

In Lagos, participants also took part in spinning sessions, fitness challenges, relaxation therapies provided by Oriki and exercise sessions organised by iFitness, which offered special discounts to UBA employees.

UBA’s Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Alero Ladipo, said the initiative demonstrates the bank’s holistic approach to employee welfare and sustainable development.

She noted that the programme supports a healthy workplace culture, strengthens team spirit and encourages staff to contribute positively to society through volunteerism and environmental responsibility.

The bank said “Jogging to Bond” forms part of its broader employee value proposition and ESG strategy, aimed at promoting wellness, engagement and sustainability across its operations.

UBA operates in 20 African countries, as well as the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates, providing retail, commercial and institutional banking services while advancing financial inclusion and sustainable growth.
